A New Chapter for an Old Tradition

By Junior Service League of Thomasville April 20, 2018

It’s that time of year again! The Rose Queen Pageant is searching for young women with a love of Thomasville and a desire to represent our beautiful city as a role model, an actively involved citizen in our community, and hopefully reigning Queen. Applications for the 2018 Rose Queen Pageant are now available in schools and online.

Last year’s summer date was such a hit amongst the contestant’s and their schedules that the Rose Queen Committee has brought back a summer date! This year’s Rose Queen Pageant is scheduled for June 15th at 7:00pm and is open to young ladies who are high school juniors, Thomasville or Thomas County residents and at least 16 years of age by June 15th.

“We are looking so forward to working with this year’s contestants, and immensely enjoyed being part of last year’s pageant.,” said Mariam Mirabzadeh, JSL President.  The Junior Service League of Thomasville, an 86 year old organization that proudly supports children’s programs in our area partnered with the team at the City of Thomasville last year to learn the ‘ropes’ of hosting one of Thomasville’s favorite traditions, and are proudly stepping into the role as permanent hosts.

“JSL has always been involved in some way with the Rose Queen Pageant as volunteers, and several league ladies have served the town as Queen or Court,” said Mirabzadeh. The Rose Queen Pageant is a very special 70-year-old event that our community shines at! The young ladies who participate in the Pageant not only have the opportunity to represent Thomasville at various city functions, including Rose Show and Festival, local Parades, HOTC events, civic and JSL hosted events they also have an opportunity at winning scholarships.

Rose Queen Pageant contestants will work with JSL mentors, and community leaders polishing their interviewing and speaking skills, poise, write personal essays, and even work on their own personal and team choreography. These young ladies that come from varying school systems in our community come together in a special way and shape relationships and bonds during rehearsals and practices. “It’s amazing watching the girls support each other and build friendships through this journey together and how their relationships build well after the Pageant is over – this is the place lifelong friendships are made.” Says Mirabzadeh.

Thomasville Rose Queen contestants are leaders and changemakers, who give of their time to volunteering efforts and community engagements; they are well spoken and well rounded, hardworking and talented! To be crowned Rose Queen is a true achievement of dedication and a desire to make an impact.
