The Thomas County Historical Society is proud to honor the long-standing tradition of celebrating tricks, treats, and all things Halloween at the Lapham-Patterson House this fall. For decades, the annual reading of Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven” delighted generations of Thomasville residents. Jeff Lovett will provide a recitation of Edgar Allen Poe’s, The Raven, at 6pm on Friday October 27. Following the reading, Historical Society staff will provide hourly tours of the Lapham-Patterson House. Tours are available for $10 per adult and $5 per student ages 6-17. Those guests who would like to paint a pumpkin in the backyard as an added activity may do so for $5 each. Registration is required.
All tours are limited in size, so those interested in participating should make reservations early. The Bookshelf will host a “pop-up” shop at the Lapham-Patterson House featuring works by Edgar Allen Poe and other seasonal titles for readers of all ages.
This year, we are proud to add a new element to the Halloween fun! The public is invited to attend a free screening of House on Haunted Hill, a 1959 thriller starring Vincent Price written by Robb White, a Thomasville native. Wealthy eccentric Frederick Loren (Vincent Price) has a proposal for five guests at a possibly haunted mansion: Show up, survive a night filled with scares and receive $10,000 each. The film is appropriate for guests aged 12 and up. Limited concessions will be available for purchase at the event and donations will be accepted. Guests are asked to bring their own chairs and blankets for seating in the backyard. A $5 cooler fee will be collected upon entry and guests are prohibited from bringing in glass bottles.

Located at 626 N. Dawson St., the eccentric Victorian home built during Thomasville’s Resort Era is open for regular tours Fridays from 1pm to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. Parking is available on Dawson St., and behind the home via Webster St.
